Visiting European teams are driving a surge of interest in Maryland.
The Baltimore Ravens have sold more than 60,000 tickets to the AC Milan vs. Chelsea Football Club soccer match that will be held at M&T Bank Stadium on July 24.
The match in Baltimore is part of the World Football Challenge, a six-city round-robin tournament being played in the United States this summer, when both European clubs are preparing for their new season.
As the first soccer event to ever be hosted at M&T Bank Stadium, Ravens officials have been encouraged by the strong fan interest.
“We could not be more pleased with the reaction our community has had to bringing an international soccer match to Baltimore,” said Ravens vice president of ticket sales and operations Baker Koppelman. “Reaching 60,000 tickets sold is a significant milestone, but we have more work to do. To reach a sellout would be a tremendous statement for Baltimore and put us in a strong position to host future high-profile events.”
Capacity at the stadium is 70,000.
Washington DC, the Virginia area near Maryland that is the home of Major League Soccer's DC United, has long been a hotbed of soccer support, and the club's own Santino Quaranta hails from Baltimore.
